Established as an economic power in the Mediterranean Sea, Genoa began building the Palace in 1298.

From the first years after its construction, the "Torre del Popolo", also known as Grimaldina, was a symbol of power and its tolling marks the most important moments of the city.

The Palace was later enlarged in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries but, in 1777, a serious fire forced the palace to undergo a new restoration.

Thanks to a series of successive decorative works and a massive renovation, in 1992 the Palazzo found its old splendor and was opened to the city.
